Captions Review

1. Citizens of Northern Ireland gather in an empty field to release lanterns during the 2013 Winter Lights Festival. Moments before everyone was rushing around to get a lantern and have it lit before the scheduled time to release them.

2.Chris Jameson puts up an excessive amount of christmas lights every year the week after thanksgiving to make his children happy. Soon after the electricity shorted out so he had to take some down.

Magazines Part 2

Early Magazine Covers:
Early magazine covers were usually a title and a table of contents or they were modeled over book covers and had a title and publication date. They also sometime added a small black and white picture or drawing that was for a decretive purpose. Often times there was no cover at all and they began the article on the first page.

The Poster Cover:
The poster cover was a picture someone drew that took up the entire magazine cover. Often times the picture had no relevance to any of the articles in the magazine and was just there for a decretive purpose. People still do posters covers now but with actual photographs that san relate to the content in the magazine.

Pictures Married to Types:
This relied on cover lines to draw the reader in. They also covered part of the magazine name with the model placed in interesting poses. They made the title more fancy and interesting and added cover lines down the sides of the magazine.

In the Forest of Words:
In this type the word were just as important as the pictures. They had large words and a large amount of words on the cover that said what was in the magazine. They still have large pictures but they don't often necessarily have to do mush with the content of the articles.

My Favorite Cover

Vanity Fair, January 2012: "Lady Gaga"

What really caught my eye was the outfit that she is wearing. The bright red color and the huge hat are appealing to the eye and interesting to look like because it is interesting. Also the hat causes shadows on her face that are a good contrast against all the brightness of the cover. She looks really happy and in her element posing for the picture and her face looks relaxed and like shes enjoying doing the shoot. The magazine also has the name Lady Gaga really big on the cover. There is no mistaking what the main feature is about so if people like Lady Gaga then they would know to check out that magazine. Also the name of the magazine is really big so the magazine is very recognizable.

  2. Eyes are enlarged
  3. Stomach is made flatter
  4. Legs are made longer
  5. feet are made smaller
  6. Change her skin tone

It is not ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like shown in the videos because it is not showing that person's true beauty and it gives the people who see those photos a false since of beauty that is not achievable and cause the eating disorders we have today. I think any change somebody makes to a person's appearance is ethically wrong to the same extent because it all masks that person't true appearance. I think maybe taking out blemishes or scars are ok because those are things that the person might want removed but everything else is wrong. Fashion photography tries to hide the truth of a person's appearance while photojournalism tries to tell the complete truth and a story through one or more pictures. Fashion photography is what you see in ads and magazines that people try to look like, but what most of the people like in magazines is not obtainable unless the person does it through unhealthy means. People look at photojournalism in newspapers in print and online and they look at the photos to get a better understanding of the story but most of the time the photos are not altered to they tell the complete truth. I think you are showing us these videos to show us what not to do to the people in our photos. None of the videos are of guys because a guys body is not as high scrutinized as a woman's so the editors don't change their body's as drastically as the do the woman's.

Portraits

  1. Take series of shots
  2. Hold your camera on an angle
  3. take unfocused shots
Casual Portrait

I liked this photo because of the emotion you can see on the boy's face. It's because of that emotion that you can predict the emotion on the mothers face as well.
I liked this photo because the woman does not typical with her hair and outfit, but she looks so happy and shows such genuine emotion.

Environmental Portrait
I liked this photo because the woman appears to not notice the camera and is going on with her daily life. Also what she is doing is not a common thing you see so it makes the photo interesting.

I liked this photo because the man is playing a very uncommon instrument and it make the photo really interesting. Also his house or the place that he is located looks very natural so that tells you a bit about the mans beliefs.

Self Portrait
I like this photo because the self portrait is actually in the lens of the camera and it portrays the girls love for photography.

I like this photo because the mans expression is very interesting and it appears that he is doing some sort of motion.

For my portrait shoot i would like to do either my friend, who is a cheerleader, doing some jumps or tumbling, or one of my friends that plays instrument. If I were to do the cheerleader I would probably go to her cheer gym or just out in the front yard, and the musician would have to be at their house so i could get shots of her playing. To make the shots successful I need to focus on the rules of photography, make sure the shots are interesting to look at, and show motion.

American Soldier

A) The most powerful image is number 78 because it shows his mother crying after he comes home from a tour and you can see how much she loves her son.
B) At Home In Denver #1- #15
     At Basic Training #16- #30
     In Iraq #50- #70
     Back in Denver #71- #82
I  think the most powerful set was the set where he comes back home because you can see all the emotion on all of his friends and families faces.
C) The images work together to tell a story because they are in chronological order.

The Captions
A) The captions are usually written in present tense.
B) The captions help enhance the story because they help explain exactly what is going on in each photo.
Ian hugs his two friends goodbye as he prepares to leave for army. His friends cried after he left as they realized they would not see their friend for quite some time.

Soldiers sleep on bleachers while they wait to be picked up. Others read or thought about what would come once they were out on the field.

Ian smiles as he walks through the airport with his friends and family. Everyone hoped that his tour in Iraq would be his one.

Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO

Aperture
F2.8

F20
1. We closely relate aperture to the human eye.
2. The smaller the aperture the less light gets in, the higher the aperture the more light gets in.
3. When the aperture is smaller and letting in less light the more of the photo is in focus. When the aperture is bigger in more light is let in the the background get out of focus and only the object in the foreground in in focus.

Shutter Speed
 Fast

Slow
a) 1/25th
b)1/25th
c)1/1000th
d)1/250th
e)1/250th
f)1/1000th
Aperture Priority: You set the lens aperture but the camera automatically sets the shutter speed.
Shutter Priority: You set the shutter speed but the camera automatically sets the aperture.
Manual: You set the shutter speed and the aperture.

ISO
 ISO 200

ISO 6400

1) The advantages of shooting at a higher ISO during a sporting event is because there is not as much light and you still want to freeze the image.
2) You should use a low ISO when there is plenty of light or if your camera is on a flat surface or tripod.
3)You should use a high ISO when there is not as much light or you want to get ultra fast shots.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3

Something that caught my eye while looking at Helen Levitts photos was all the emotion she captured. You could tell how that subject felt at the exact moment she took the photo and it causes you to feel like you were there.

Photo 1:

In this photo I can see the young boys playing over the doorway. It seems as if they are fighting and one of them is about to fall off. I could also see a little girl that seems as if she wishes she was up with them, but is to scared to climb up there. I can smell the exhaust from the cars as they pass me, getting into my nose and making me cough. There is trash on the street and rotten food causing there to be flea ridden rats and cockroaches to be all over the street and in gutters causing a very unpleasant odor as it mixes with the smell of the exhaust. I could hear the children yelling and talking and the footsteps of people walking on the side walk behind me. There is also the loud rumble of cars as they pass showering me with dirt. I could taste the dirt that I was breathing in from the cars and the exhaust that they were letting out. I felt scared that the children were going to fall off of the door frame. They were running and pushing each other on it so it was rather terrifying seeing up there.

Photo 2:

In this photo I could see some girls playing. When I was about to capture the photo a little boy came running down the street and pulled one of the girls dresses up and ran off. I felt quite amused because the girl didn't even have time to react it happened so quickly. The boy also seemed so pleased that he was able to pull off such a feat that i couldn't help but let out a small laugh. I could smell the dust as it got caught in my throat, making my voice sound scratchy and strained. The trash in the street was putting off a foul odor as well as the car exhaust from the cars in the street. I could hear the cars pass me and people talking in the street. The girls playing and talking was my main focus though since i was trying to capture them in a photo that really showed what their lives were like. I could taste the air, smoggy from the smoke coming from the factories and the exhaust coming from the cars as it got in my mouth making me feel sick.

Something i would like to create to show off my photography would be a blog, specifically a tumblr since so many people have one and would be able to find it easily. I would also like to create prints or posters of some of what i consider to be my better photos to hang up around places so people could see them that way.

Mural Project

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?
We could do themes about fine arts, the nature around Bowie, regular classes, or just the different types of people here at Bowie.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?
We should use the regular cameras because people, like me, who don't have camera phones wouldn't be able to take any photos for this project.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
I would want to put the mural in the lunch room or on a wall in the academic or fine arts buildings that don't have anything on them.

Abandoned Theme Park Reflection

I would want to visit Nara Dreamland in Nara, Japan because i think some of the rides there look really beautiful. I think abandoned roller coasters tell such great stories and knowing how many people used to enjoy that coaster makes me happy just thinking about it. I would love to go there and take photos because abandoned places are interesting and beautiful and i would like to take some of those photos.
Chris Luckhardt

  1. Corkscrew Falls in Ohio
  2. Bamboo forest in Japan
  3. White Sand Dunes in New Mexico
  4. Crooked Forest in Poland
  5. Antelope Canyon in Arizona
4. Crooked Forest in Poland, Keren Su

I think it would be fun to photograph this place because the trees are so interesting. It is a natural phenominum because scientist can't figure what made the trees grow like they did and i find that really interesting. You could really get some great landscape photos from different angles and times of day and could be really beautiful. I probably will never get to visit the Crooked Forest because it would be really expensive to get a flight to Poland from Texas. I could use any type of camera but i would like a wide lens so i could get a lot of the trees in the photo.

Africa Reflection

This is my favorite photo by Nick Brandt because it looks like the tree is about to fall on the lion but you know that is won't. It is contradicting the law of gravity.A rule that is really prominent in this photo is framing because the tree is to the side and above the lion creating the frame. There could also be lines but I am not quite sure.

Nick Brandt uses a Pentax67 II with 120 film and a portrait or wide angle lens, this is important because it allows him to get close to the animals or far away to capture his pictures. He takes these photos because he wants to show animals in their state of being, not just action shots so that everything can be preserved about the animal once it goes extinct.
"There is also something deeply, emotionally stirring and affecting about the plains of Africa—those vast, green rolling plains punctuated by graphically perfect acacia trees under the huge skies." -Nick Brandt

Peer Refection

http://sarahhphotojournalism.blogspot.com/

I think the person followed the rule of framing best. The chair actually creates a frame around the girl. The rule she followed the least was lines because there are no actual lines, just the line from the seats. I really like how she portrays the subject effectively and she took interesting and appealing photos. I think that she could have tried to find a photo for simplicity that was close so you didn't see as much of the background.

Academic Shoot Reflection

A challenge that I had while getting these photos was having the students not look at me. People would look right at the camera and i would have to tell them to get back to their work. Something that I thought about a lot was trying to get a shot with good balance. Not a lot of the classes had good setups to get a balance shot so you had to be creative, but I still was not quite successful. If I could do this project again I would like to try different angles and i would like to take more photos so i could have had a better section to choose from. I would still keep my framing picture because I think that one was the most successful and I would  probably go to the same classes because they had a lot of students and activities going on that I could choose to shoot. For my next prompt I think the easiest rule to achieve will be simplicity and rule of thirds because there is many different thing you could achieve with those rules to get interesting pictures. I think the hardest rule to capture is balance because you need a certain amount of people or objects to make the picture look balanced and it is sometimes hard to find that. One rule that I am still not entirely clear on is lines and how to capture a good picture that has lines leading to the subject. It is not entirely that I am unsure about lines, but how to get a good picture using lines.

Academic Shoot

Rule of Thirds
I believe that I followed the rule correctly. My subject, the two guys in the right hand side, is easy to see because they are the only people doing work so your eyes are drawn to them.

Balance
I believe that I could have followed the rule a little bit more. My subjects are the people around the table doing notes, but it could have been more balanced if I had gotten the fourth person in the photo.

Simplicity
I think that i followed the rule pretty well. The boy is the main subject and he takes up most of the photo. I think I could have gotten closer to him so he would take up more of the photo, but it is obvious that he is the main subject.

Lines
I believe that i followed the rule because you can see the lines that the blinds make, and also the lines that the chairs make with students. My subjects are the students doing their work because the lines define all the students.

Framing
I think that i followed this rule really well because you can see the students framing the girl in the red hoodie really clearly. You can clearly see that girl in the red hoodie is the subject because the two students close up create a border around he and draw your eyes to the girl.

Merger
This is a merger because the boy and girl at the front of the class are both wearing red and have dark hair so they seem to merge together.

Unusual and Interesting Photos

Part 1
I think that Christian Rhum's photos are really interesting to look at. They are exciting and different mostly because you don't see many photos like his. I think he had an add on for his camera or changed a setting on his camera to create the photos. I think a good building to do this on would be the longhorn tower when it is all lit up with the one. It is really accessible so it would be a really interesting picture to take.

Part 2

I found this photo in Pictorial Singlets. I chose this photo because I loved the colors and how the roller coaster contrasts them. This photo won second place and I think that the judge would have been drawn to the coaster like I was. I really like the contrast and also that the coaster is in the back so you can see the sunset reflecting on the water.

I found this photo in Feature Single and it was an additional entree. I really like this photo because you feel a sense of calm like you are just watching the child play. I also really like the contrast between the sky and sand. The judge probably liked the story that the picture tells like I did.

I found this photo in Environment and it was an additional entree. I really like this photo because the butterflies together like that are beautiful and makes you feel energetic like you want to be there with the butterflies. The judge probably like all the colors and shape that the butterflies make and that was why they decided to include it even though it didn't win.

Part 3
Photographers have to look for emotions expressed on a subjects face to tell a story, take a picture of something unexpected, and take a picture of something that means something to you.

This photo has the same type of subject, but is set up differently. I think the the photographer had their reasons for taking the photo but I don't think they necessarily follow the suggestions. I think the landscape and more abstract paintings will influence me because that is just what I like to look at.
