Flash Photography Basics

  • Every flash photograph is two exposures in one
  • Fill flash can be used when subject is backlit or side lit to eliminate silhouettes or shadows
  • Flash exposure is not affected by shutter speed
  • Flash illumination is dramatically affected by distance
  • Your camera measures ambient light and flash illumination separately
  • with automatic flash metering, the flash illumination is measured after the shutter button is pressed, and the flash output is adjusted accordingly
  • Every SLR camera with a mechanical shutter box has a maximum flash sync shutter speed
  • Harsh lighting, washed out subjects and red eye can be eliminated by using diffusers and light bouncing
  • It is possible to change the order of when the flash fires using "Rear Curtain Sync"
  • Removing the flash from the top of the camera helps eliminate red eye and unflattering shadows

Event Shoot Peer Review

Tori Stephens

1. My favorite photo is The photo with the peacock because its just something interesting to see out in the wild and it has a good profile.
2. My least favorite photo is the picture with  the person because the bump is in an awkward position to the person, however there is nice symmetry.
3. Over all she has good lighting and composition, and nice landscapes and interesting objects.
4. One area she could improve is making sure the main subject stands out more from the background.

Painting Recreation Peer Review

Linda Garza

1. She did a really good job recreating the painting because the colors are all very similar, She is positioned the same, and the shadow on the face is the same in the photo as on the painting.
2. They did do an acceptable job at recreating the photo because they look very similar, the only real difference is the clothing a little but that is just because of time difference.

6 Station Peer Review

Shayla Perez

1. My favorite photo is the light painting photo because i like how she used both bike wheels and how the different colors contrast each other.
2. My least favorite photo is the bubble one. I think it could be better if she was closer to the bubble and left out the straw.
3. Overall the photos have good composition and she follows a lot of the rules creating an attractive image.
4. Overall I think she could have made the exposure lighter because most of the photos are dark.
