Unusual and Interesting Photos

Part 1
I think that Christian Rhum's photos are really interesting to look at. They are exciting and different mostly because you don't see many photos like his. I think he had an add on for his camera or changed a setting on his camera to create the photos. I think a good building to do this on would be the longhorn tower when it is all lit up with the one. It is really accessible so it would be a really interesting picture to take.

Part 2

I found this photo in Pictorial Singlets. I chose this photo because I loved the colors and how the roller coaster contrasts them. This photo won second place and I think that the judge would have been drawn to the coaster like I was. I really like the contrast and also that the coaster is in the back so you can see the sunset reflecting on the water.

I found this photo in Feature Single and it was an additional entree. I really like this photo because you feel a sense of calm like you are just watching the child play. I also really like the contrast between the sky and sand. The judge probably liked the story that the picture tells like I did.

I found this photo in Environment and it was an additional entree. I really like this photo because the butterflies together like that are beautiful and makes you feel energetic like you want to be there with the butterflies. The judge probably like all the colors and shape that the butterflies make and that was why they decided to include it even though it didn't win.

Part 3
Photographers have to look for emotions expressed on a subjects face to tell a story, take a picture of something unexpected, and take a picture of something that means something to you.

This photo has the same type of subject, but is set up differently. I think the the photographer had their reasons for taking the photo but I don't think they necessarily follow the suggestions. I think the landscape and more abstract paintings will influence me because that is just what I like to look at.

Photo Manipulation

I think this is the most unethical because it completely changed the message of the photo. It makes the soldier look lie he is going to shoot the man if he doesn't stop moving, but in the actual photo the soldiers gun is down and he is listening to the man.

I think this is the least unethical because they didn't make a huge change like adding or taking something out, all they did was move the placement of the pyramid. From a different angel the Pyramids could look like that depending on where the photographer is standing.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

Photographers, professionals or regular people, are constantly changing photos. They can take items out of photos or add extra items in. People do this to make the photo more interesting or to alter the message that the photo is conveying. If a person gets caught altering a photo then all of there credentials are taken away and most of the photos they have taken will be blocked so the public can't see the altered images anymore. This is completely unethical because people look at the pictures in a newspaper to help add to message that the article stated and if the photo is altered then the people are getting a false message.

Post shoot Reflection

A challenge I had some was trying to think abstractly instead of just taking a picture of just something that says bowie or a square. It was also hard because once lunch started we had to move around to get the desired picture. I thought about the focus of my photos because i didn't want the object to be out of frame of be too close or far away. If I could do this again i would focus more on framing and lines because I like the way those concepts draw your eyes to the main subject in the photo. I would do my bowie photo the same because it has framing and simplicity and i just really like the way it looks.

Merger

In this photograph the smoke and the building are the same color so it hides the main subject of the photo, the building. You can also barely see the remains of the other building that has already collapsed.

Framing

In this photograph the smoke coming from the buildings frames the rest of the city, and the bridge also frames the smoke creating depth.

Balance

This photo creates balance because you have the Empire States building up front towering over everything else, but in the back you see the twin towers, also taller than everything else, smoking. Your eyes are drawn to both buildings equally.

Lines

This photo shows lines because the lines of smoke draws your eyes to the side of the building where you can see the people getting ready to jump out. The vertical lines also represent the direction that the people will be falling

Rule of Thirds

This photo is using the rule of thirds because the flag, which is the main subject because it is colorful and bright where as the rest of the photo is grey, is on the right side of the photo, not in the center

Simplicity

This photo shows simplicity because the building with smoke is obviously the main subject since there is nothing in the background except the blue sky to distract from it.

National Geographic

This is my favorite photo because I think that is is beautiful that in a sea of white there is one lone tree still surviving during the winter. It could symbolize that even in the harshest conditions you can survive and come out stronger. I also love it because i have never seen a large amount of snow before and to see that mush untouched by humanity is amazing.

Touching People

1. What do you think about this project and photo essay?
I find this concept really interesting. Having random people who don't know each other pose in different ways where they have to be touching would make each photo different and unique to look at.

2. What would you do if someone approached you with a camera and asked you to participate in a photo shoot and then ask you to touch a stranger?
I would probably participate because an opportunity to participate in such a unique project doesn't happen often. I would be really interested to see how the person I was paired and I would pose together.

3. Think of an unusual photo shoot similar to this one that you think would be fun to go and shoot.
A shoot that is similar to this one that would be fun to shoot would to ask only young children to pose together since they are in the stage that the opposite gender has cooties, it would be interesting to see how they would touch each other.

4. Finally, tell me what you thought of the photography, are the photos good? Do you like looking at them?
I really liked the photos. They were interesting to look at and made me think about the different backgrounds the people came from.

Top 40 Photos

 Aaron Thompson
I chose this photo because I felt like i could connect to it. Even though nobody in my family has died during war, it made think about what if my Grandfather had died while he was fighting. The boys expression is what really drew me in. You can see how sad he is that his father is dead and he has to receive the flag. I think it mad the cut for the top 40 because of all the emotion it shows, it makes the reader want to cry with the boy.

 Yomiuri Shimbun
I chose this photo because it drew me in emotionally. You can see the joy on the soldiers after finding the baby girl and just knowing that she is now safe and they can start locating her parents. I like that the soldiers face is up close and you can see the emotion on his face, but in the background you can see other soldiers still looking for people and animals that could have gotten stuck. I think this made the top 40 because it shows that even after natural disaster that causes a lot of sadness, miracles can still happen.

Claud Detloff
I chose this photo because of the way the photo is set up so you can see the long line of soldiers all the way down the street. You can also see how much the father and son love each other and that also drew me to it. I think this photo made the top 40 because it shows the importance of family and that the son doesn't want his father to leave, even if he doesn't realize that he might not make it back.
